Training for New Lacrosse Officials
Everything you need for the 2026 season: schedules, certification requirements, field mechanics, and gear.
2026 training and certification
GPLOA provides a structured path for new and returning boys and girls lacrosse officials in the Kansas City area. No prior officiating experience is required. Training covers rules, signals, positioning, safety, communication, game administration, and the professional habits expected before, during, and after an assignment.
Boys classroom sessions include scheduled instruction at Aspiria NOW in Overland Park, followed by required on-field mechanics work at Blue Valley North High School. Girls training includes classroom and field instruction at announced Kansas City-area locations. Review every listed date because requirements can differ for first-year officials, high school students, adults, and experienced officials returning for another season.
Complete the certification checklist early
Officials should update their USA Lacrosse membership to the correct role and association, complete any required background screening and online education, pass the applicable rules examinations, and attend mandatory training. Save certificates and confirmation records as each item is completed. The published February 20, 2026 certification deadline applies to required boys officiating materials, and late completion may prevent spring assignments.
Requirements are not identical for every official. Adults may need both NFHS and youth rules examinations, while student officials can have a different testing path. Returning officials should confirm standing rather than assuming a prior credential remains active. Contact GPLOA when a membership, test, background check, or certificate does not appear correctly.
Prepare the right uniform and field equipment
Arrive with the approved uniform, whistle, cards, coin, scorecard, writing tools, timing equipment, and other items required for your assignment type. Boys and girls mechanics use different equipment in some situations, and adult requirements can differ from youth-official requirements. The training page lists current checklists and links to the GPLOA partner store for approved apparel.
Training is more than a compliance exercise. Classroom instruction explains the standard; field work teaches officials to see the play, maintain a useful angle, communicate with partners, and make decisions without hesitation. Register early, place every session on your calendar, and use GPLOA mentors as a resource throughout the season.
